I didn’t intend Image a Day to be diaristic but as the years roll on and I look back, it’s plain that my creative practice tallies with time, place and circumstance. Sadly this post is made two days after my mother had a near fatal fall. She lives on a remote Greek island in the Aegean. On the night of her accident there were thunderstorms and high winds. The emergency helicopter couldn’t take off from Rhodes to fly over to the island to pick her up. She sustained a terrible head injury which the local doctors remarkably managed to stitch back together. She also fractured a vertebra and damaged her right hand. Thankfully after four nights in hospital we managed to get her safely back to the island. Now it’s just a question of time. I’ll be here to care for her until she recovers enough to look after herself. Hopefully she’ll make a full recovery. My mother is a remarkably strong woman. How she survived the three metre fall into a narrow concrete gulley nobody knows, but she did, and you realise how very precious and precarious life is.
