I was pondering the ever-changing light experienced on and above the sea and how to reflect that in this series of paintings. As an experiment, I painted onto tin foil and was thrilled with the result. Not necessarily in terms of a good or bad painting but that suddenly here was a painting, that mirrors in part, the effects of light over the bay. Finally I have a piece that changes in response to its environment. This feels like a real breakthrough. The surface has the appearance of the patina you often see on antique mirrors, so this will be my next experimentation and adds another dimension to my practice. To paint on mirrors will be fascinating and will go some way in easing my conscience in adding junk to an already overloaded planet. To use what's already here can only be a good thing and my egg tempera paints are not at all toxic for the environment.
