Untitled, oil on canvas 100 x 80cm. These works evolved after a trip to New York in 2006 and Paris in 2008 (along with two more trips to New York in 2014 and 2019). I was immediately taken with Richard Diebenkorn's Berkeley series and the connection of some of his works to Matisse. In Paris, inspiration for this particular style of painting was further enhanced when I discovered the work of Nicolas de Staël at The Pompidou. Robert Motherwell, Helen Frankenthaler and Pierre Soulages have also been influential. The show 'Century' by Soulages at Lévy Gorvy moved me so much to tears I had to leave the gallery to compose myself. I'm still questioning how those works moved me to that degree.
