Banana leaves at RHS Wisley. Banana leaves are used in tropical regions to make roofs and fences. Also for wrapping and heating food. Historically they were the primary source of material for writing surfaces. The rounded letters of scripts that originated from writing on banana leaves such as Burmese and Javanese were necessarily rounded because a sharp implement applied in a straight line would risk splitting the heavily veined leaf and ruining the surface.
