After the experimental watercolours, I realised how having a non-linear, organic boundary brings something dead or alive to the picture plane. Usually I paint forms that are relative to one another, forms that could constitute balances, forms that impinge on other forms. So this 'complete' object (that isn't relying on others) is a new direction. It has the feel of fabric and of a form in transition. I question this in relation to where I am and who I am. It's almost 'a being' tentatively finding its feet and standing alone in strength and fragility
